Day 5: The diff is disassembled and stripped ready for painting. The rear radius rods are also stripped down and cleaned up. The chassis has been stripped of all bolt on brackets and fuel/brake lines. The team are busy stripping the paint off ready for paint - it makes a quick job with Rick, Bo and Jase all going hard out with the paint removers. The chassis is coming up great! Although one problem area we found was where the chassis has been "C'd" to allow for fuel pump clearance. As that car will run an electric feul pump we will repair this section. Whitey had the job of making up the fill in piece from 3mm plate. The chassis is now ready to be taken to Helmsie's Auto Restoration in Hamilton for paint!

Hey! Here's an article from the "Hauraki Herald" 25th Feb. Quite a neat story and great exposure for the team. Also, please remember that they are only working on the car during their "Workshop" lessons - this is 45 minutes on Tuesday & Wednesday and 90 minutes on Thursday - that's all! So they have done an amazing job in such a short time frame. The body and chassis are now at Helmsie's Auto Restorations in Hamilton being prepped for paint. The team will now focus on cleaning up and detailing the suspension and other chassis components as well as making a start on the remaining engine assembly. Stay tuned!

Day 5: We are getting into the nitty gritty of getting ready for final detailing while the body and chassis are away getting painted at Helmsies Auto Restorations in Hamilton. The diff has been buffed up ready for paint. The front brake callipers getting the wire brush treatment. The "Rams Horns" exhaust manifolds have had all casting marks removed and are shown here getting a file finish. Jason using steel wool to clean up the chrome which is coming up like brand new! No work on the car tomorrow as it is School Athletics Day.

Okay - so things have been a bit quiet with the HRC Roadster the past week due to School swimming sports etc etc. But trust me, the boys are working hard cleaning all the chassis and suspension parts ready for painting next week. Also, we picked this up today and dropped it off at Helmsie's Auto Restorations in Hamilton for painting.... A big THANKS to Jodie Armstrong of ARMSTRONG MARINE in Te Puke for making the cut down '32 radiator surround and arranging for the radiator to be overhauled by Te Puke Radiators and the kool new stainless grill insert. All at no cost! Bloody legends....... Also, Pioneer Auto Parts www.pap.co.nz have sent us a BRAND NEW B&M shifter for the car - also at NO COST. You can see a picture of this on the back page of the latest New Zealand Hot Rod Magazine - the one in the middle. Now this is an all alloy piece of art and would look at home in any contemporary Hot Rod. But we are building a 60's style car so it will be in for some "modification" next week...... stay tuned!

Day 6: Here's the B&M shifter as supplied by PIONEER AUTO PARTS - Thanks! It is a real flash looking unit - but has billet aluminium which won't suit the style of the car. So we thought we had better change that....... The first step was to remove the alloy neck by unscrewing the 2 cap screws that attach it to the shifter body. A new attachment bracket was cut from 6mm plate. Here is the new bracket attached to the shifter body. A jig was made (we are going to make 2 of them) and the chain laid out over it and each link welded. An 8mm bolt was welded to the last link and will attach the shifter knob - a grenade suppiled by Macs Speed Equipment! Here is the finished shifter - now that will suit the style of car we are building! It just needs a bit of detailing (cleaning up the welds) and then a visit to Otahuhu Chromeplaters for some shiny stuff. How cool is that?

Day 7: I wasn't able to make it to class today as I had to go to Auckland to pickup the new wheels for the roadster. Advanced Four Wheel Equipment sourced the wheels for us from the USA and they are currently getting new tyres courtesy of Hauraki Tyre and Battery in Thames. Pics will be coming soon....
But I left some instructions for the team. As I said yesterday, we are building 2 shifters from chain. I told the team to be creative with the 2nd one and to surprise me........ Man, this thing rocks! They've done it in a spiral..... Pictures tomorrow.

Day 8: I mentioned yesterday that the team got creative making the 2nd shifter lever. Bo is busy cleaning up the welds. Mac's Speed Equipment donated a grenade (not live!) for the shifter knob. It is being drilled ready for threading. The boys carefully cut the thread......... And here it is all finished! Just needs a visit to the chrome platers. It will be a talking point for sure.... We've scored the use of a portable sandblaster from Ross Morrison (who is building quite possibly NZ's best ever '63 Fairlane) and it is making a great job of stripping back in all the hard to reach places.....

18 March: We just picked up our new wheels and tyres for the roadster - aren't they cool? They are 15x8 and 14x6 American Racing Chrome Smoothies supplied by Advanced Four Wheel Equipment. Give Stu a call for a great deal! And the tyres.... well what can we say! Robbie and Sheryl Manderson of Hauraki Tyre and Battery in Thames DONATED a set of tyres for the project - how's that??!!! The back tyres are very tall profile......... We can't wait to see them on the car! Tomorrow we are off to Helmsie's Auto Restoration to paint the car.... check back soon!

Day 9: Okay - you are going to see some rapid progress now! Today the team painted all the suspension and brake parts in etch primer and will finish them in white expoxy enamel tomorrow. They each had a part to paint. Stay tuned as all hell is about to break loose!

Day 10: Sorry no photos today! We've picked up the chassis from Helmsies Auto Restorations and the team has painted all of the suspension components. I left them to it and they did a great job - no runs!
Tomorrow we plan to have a rolling chassis - and I won't forget the camera.......
We have a deadline of April 2nd to have the car finished for a New Zeland Hot Rod Magazine photo shoot.... nothing like a deadline to work to!

Day 11: The picture of above is of the fantastic painting job the students did on Wednesday - all by themselves! No runs even....... The painted chassis in metalflake green at 11am this morning. The front shocks are tried for size...... The front suspension and brakes are installed to the chassis. The rear suspension is installed. It is all painted white to contrast the chassis and body. 1 and 1/2 hours after we started - we had a rolling chassis! Notice the new wheels and tyres - don't they look great? Rear shot of the rolling chassis. The next school day is Wednesday and we are aiming to have the engine, gearbox, driveshaft, radiator and brakelines fitted by the end of the day.

Day 12: The boys lift the motor in. Acutally we cheated - we lifted the chassis over the motor and carefully let it down - it worked a treat! The motor is a 305cu Chev loaned by Dave Green at Specialty Cars in Matamata. Looking good! The engine and gearbox were sprayed using VHT engine enamel in silver/aluminium. The rocker covers were loaned from Rich Neale aka Penguin and are early B/C alloy units. The pulleys are from Specialty Cars. The 3x2 carb and manifold setup, plus driveshaft and plumbing will be fitted tomorrow. So what do you think?

Day 13: And it was a busy one........ Rick is fitting the headlights which have been re-polished and came up mint. Jason is bolting the torque converter to the flexplate while Deano is tightening up the engine mount bolts. Bo is installing the driveshaft. Frantic work! The team wagged English lessons to work on the Rod. Bo and Rick are attaching the shifter bracket to the gearbox while the others are installing the pedal box, booster and brake lines. We achieved a heck of a lot today - although it may not look like it! We were hoping to have the carbs and manifold installed today, but there has been a hold up....

Hey Noddy, do you have an exhaust system sorted on this car cos I have a set of recently chromed speedway style headers (see the picture of my bucket you posted for me) they will be avaliable (for you to use if you like) by the end of the weekend. They are no longer required because I have just finished a set of zoomies for my bucket and they are off to the chromers tommorow for a lick of the shiny stuff. The zoomies will be installed on my bucket for the drive to Whangamta so I won't be needing my speedway headers for some time. I can most likely get them on a courier by Monday if you like.
PS the green and white is freakin awesome!!!
also what size and brand and cost would those rear tyres be?

DBA - that would be FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!! You wouldn't believe this - yesterday we lined up the rams horns exhausts that the kids had totally smoothed up - they hit the chassis by about 5mm - bugger! A lot of hair pulling out.........
If you could loan us the headers then that would be a big save for us - my address is 117 Chveron Crescent, Whangamata. I'll fix you up for the courier..........
Please understand that they are on loan and we will give them back once we have finished with the car, or the owner of the car may want to purchase them off you at the end.
Cheers!
Noddy
P.S You can call me on 021 260 8946 if you want to talk......
