Hi Paul - you are a bloody legend! And the most talked about entrant during and after the Festival. But welcome to the tall poppy world. When you make yourself so "visible" people certainly demand a lot more from you and are only to happy to take a shot at you at the same time.... Just remember to remember all the smiles you created and future Hot Rodders you've made. Forget the negative...... This should put a smile on your dial! Noddy

Yep congrats to Noddy and the team... but absolute brickbats to the over bearing way in which the chief of police in Whanga enforced the liquor ban... and the total confusion around certain cafes over what was their "legal drinking area". I hope Noddy that you are able to make Vince see that police need to work with the public not against then next year... People who openly flout the lawa dnare drunken idiots should be arrested... if Vince concentrated on this instead of hounding innocent people the Hop would be even better... I saw on Saturday night near Sunnies many teens drinking and some smashed bottles.. yet where were the police...? They were from what I saw, led by Vince doing the rounds of the Cafes arresting people for in most cases being confused about where they were legally entitiled to drink.
Noddy and the team... I understand the need for increased policing... but again try to convince Vince that common sense is a trait that this overbearing policeman should learn!!!!
Incidently does anyone know how many arrests were made during this most peaceful of beach Hops?

Hi Pete,
Thanks for the feedback. We are having our debrief with the Police next week and no doubt the liquor ban will be discussed. We had a great debrief with the Council last Thursday - they are 100% behind the festival. They raised their concerns over the liquor ban as well. Al fresco dining is an issue between the Police, Council and Cafes - nothing to do with the Beach Hop. The same problem exists every long weekend when there is a liquor ban - so it isn't unique to the Beach Hop.
Personally, I didn't witness any drunken louts at the cafes - they wouldn't get served any way and the owners were moving them on. And there were only a couple of cafes concerned - Devine, Ga-ga's and Rosinni who shut at 9pm anyway. Plus the Whanga Bar I guess - but they are down the alley way. Sandz put up fencing, with a security guard. So I can't see what the problem was....
I met with the Police every day. Up until 8pm Saturday night there were no problems and they were very happy. Only about 30 arrests I believe. The final count was 260 - including drunk drivers. Incidentally, there were a number of locals arrested!
Noddy
P.S You seem to know Vince? He is a great country cop, and good for our town. But I would say he had enough of things by Saturday night......

One particular cafe was a problem... it was open beyond 9pm.. and the boundries not really well defined. I won't mention the name as I was threatened by the owner when taking photos as evidence for three friends who were arrested for drinking in what they thought was the legal precinct. There were not any drunks around the cafes... they were wandering the streets towards the Waihi end of the main road.
I have met Vince and whilst I understand he may be loved by the Whanga locals, if he had "Had enough" by Saturday night he should have questioned his role...
Sorry Noddy, but you guys do a wonderful job as did the majority of police, but a certain policeman ruined the show for some people and I know at least three people and from my info more, who are considering further action against the police officer in question. That may be strong talk but there is good policing and policing that makes people wonder what the hell they are on about. I absolutely support the reason for the ban but question the common sense used in the cases I know about. I even spoke to one officer from out of town agreed with the things I am saying here...
Please Noddy, next year try and make the council and Vince understand that they should take a sensible approach to policing.I'll be back next year... but doubt wheather the three in question will be... they feel exceptionally hard done by when their arrests were questionable and were they thought legally within the precinct of the cafe concerned. The Beach Hop has as you said nowt to do with the legal process.. but a bit of pressure to show common sense would go down well.
We will see what happens from here... but maybe a "country cop" shouldn't be in charge of policing in this situation.
I was interested in your comment that the council raised concerns re the ban... what did they say?
