The Stallion
Mothers Polishes, Waxes and Cleaners in New Zealand have confirmed that it is 99% certain they are bringing The Stallion to New Zealand for Beach Hop 2005! This 1934 Coupe won the 2003 Goodguys USAs Most Beautiful Street Rod and Detroit Autorama Ridler awards. Owner Ron Whitehead has owned this car since the 60s and had well known Hot Rod builder Chip Foose give it a face lift - with stunning results. The car has been a hit since its completion and will be incredible to see in the flesh.
Mothers are also working on some other attractions related to this car and may involve another 2 very well known cars and personalities from the USA. Stay tuned for an update?..
New Home for Beach Hop Online
Thanks to Bartley Internet & Graphics for our BRAND NEW website. There are still a few minor touches and we will be updating it regularly. You can even download your entry forms for the Ultimate and Standard entry passes. We've re-vamped the "Ultimate Pass" and it will include a special edition T shirt courtesy of Mothers and featuring the "Stallion" from USA. These passes are strictly limited to the first 300 so be quick. Oh - and the Lion Red Ultimate Pass Marquee will be erected smack in the middle of the Town Centre with the Al Dawson Rock'n'Roll Show and Brian "Elvis" Childs performing on Saturday night.
Hot Rod Mag Band
Did you know that the original "Hot Rod Mag Band" featuring Owen Campbell, Bill Ward, Craig Houston and Doug Reid are re-forming for a special one off performance at BH05? Now that should be something very special to see and hear as the lads haven't played together for about 15 years! We are very privileged that they are doing this for us......
Hot Rod Challenge
Do you think that you and 5 mates can build a Hot Rod from scratch in just 3 hours? Well download an entry form off our new website and get it into us elpronto! It costs just $20 for the team to enter with the lucky team drawn at the Thundercruise on Friday 29th April. If they can put the car together in under 3 hours, in front of the crowd on Saturday 30th, then we'll give them $500 cash and some other great prizes.
Geoff Dunn & Belinda Bedford have kindly loaned their sweet 27T Roadster to the Beach Hop for 3 years. We take over early January less motor, exhaust and wheels. Dave Green from Specialty Cars in Matamata is loaning us a good small block Chev and we'll hopefully doing a deal on some chrome "Smoothies" as well. We have a plan for how the car will look - 60's style show car...... The car will be transformed at the Whangamata Area School in Term 1 starting February 1st and taken to events around the North Island. The week before BH05 it will be completely disassembled for the Hot Rod Challenge - are you up to it? P.S If you can loan us a triple carb inlet manifold for this car we'd like to hear from you..........
Lil Nash Metro
The special little car is currently undergoing a major transformation thanks to Helmsies Auto Restorations, Mead Upholstery, Magoo's Street Rods and Otahuhu Chromeplaters. Hopefully you'll spy it for the first time at our stand at the Kumeu Swapmeet & Car Show 15th January 05. Bring your sunglasses.......
Tee Party
Do you own a T Bucket? Are you coming to BH05? Let us know and you'll be invited to the "Tee Party" where you'll all cruise together near the front of the parade and have your own reserved parking area in the town centre. It may be the biggest ever collection of T Buckets in New Zealand!
American Graffiti Star Cars
We all know what influence this movie had on a great number of us. As a tribute we want as many "clone" cars as possible who will cruise and park together. So if you've got a yellow Duece Coupe, black 55 Chev, white 58 Chev, white 57 T Bird, 49 Merc or Vespa then let us know!
Solid Gold FM
Solid Gold FM have offered us an incredible advertising package worth tens of thousands of dollars so make sure you tune into one of their stations during April 05 to catch the adverts. Also, Blackie and other Solid Gold personalities will be making an appearance at BH05!
Dragster Cracklefest
One of the highlights, and certainly the loudest, of the Beach Hop is the dragster "Cracklefest". We try and keep the race cars pre-70 bodies to keep within the theme of the weekend but we're really looking to get a BIG collection of front engined dragsters. We're also looking at a night time "Cracklefest" for those interested. How cool will that be?
60's Surf Comp
Yep - it is happening again on Saturday 30th April. You'll need to be down at the Esplanade by 7:30am - drop us an email to register. You'll get points for your grooviest 60's baggies and tricks do get practising over summer! (Wot summer???)
Coromandel FM Hop Idol
This proved to be one of the highlights if Beach Hop 2004 and we're bringing it back next year. We are working on some extra special guest judges and once again offering $500 cash first and $100 second prize. Not bad for 3 minutes work...... To enter you will need to purchase an entry form for $2 from the Coromandel FM stand during the Street Festival, select your song, and go into the draw to be one of the 10 lucky contestants. We'll post the 100 songs on our new website in the new year so you can hit the karaoke bars and start practising.
Koro Kruz
For the early birds we are organising a drive further up the Coromandel Peninsula on Thursday 28th April. The run will most likely depart Whangamata at 10:30am and head towards Whitianga for lunch with a few stops along the way in both directions. More details will be posted on the website as we get closer.
Coromandel FM Battle of the Bands
A new event for BH05 we are offering a huge opportunity for local bands. A series of heats will be held during April to select 3 finalists who will battle it out at the Whangamata Club on Thursday 28th April 05. The prize is $500 cash PLUS a day time gig at the Beach Hop Street Festival on Saturday 30th April. Entry forms are on our new website and the music must be 50's & 60's based.
Smokefree Night Cruise
On Saturday 30th April the main street in the town centre will be made ONE WAY for the Smokefree Night Cruise from 7pm until 10pm. There will be a cruising circuit around the Town Centre and we STRONGLY urge entrants to show their best driving behaviour. We will have a large number of marshals on patrol who will report ANY unacceptable driving behaviour. There will also be an increased Police presence and Booze Bus during the cruise so it is simple - don't drink and drive and no skids. The Beach Hop is promoted as a safe family event and we want to ensure its future by doing our best to make sure that everyone has a great time without over stepping the mark. Enuff Said!
Phew!
As Susan Paul would say - "But wait, there's more!" And there certainly is.........
Until next time!
